I haven't picked up the eldar book yet. What is new and cool in there? Have they gotten playable again or do their characters still suffer too much from the current "troops don't block of line of fire" and "can't assault out of moving vehicles" rules (which is what made their aspects unusable when the current edition was released)?

My son is getting it for XMAS. Our Eldar collection was 2 Grav Tanks, one fire prism, many Alaitoc rangers, AVatar, Dark reapers, Banshees, firedragons, some guardians with weapons platforms., two wave serpents and two of the wraithlords. We usually played Alaitoc and hoped to pull enemy squads off the board-great fun.
The new codex is typical GW- old troops which were worthless are great, your troops that you depended on are either worse or no better. First, you will need to buy Harlequins. These are now the fearsome assault troops armed with 'Harlequin's kiss' and some kind of psycho grenades.
I forget how they changed the star cannons around, I think it is less shots but better marine killing, but the Guardians still can't shoot worth a darn.
Fireprisms are now upgraded, they can cooperate to increase their fire effect. Too bad most people don't already have THREE!
My Vyper squadrons now are not cost effective, and I had 6 of them....
My Alaitoc Rangers have lost their ability.
There are some new commanders like Autarchs with interesting powers, use them to replace your warlocks which are now overpriced..
Winged troops-what are they called, oh yes, there is now a rules glitch. They can use a power called withdraw. This lets them deep strike, and then leave, and deepstrike again. So, you may need thirty of them now...
You still can't assault out of your wave Serpent.
Most dakkadakka people suggest at least one squad of the Fire Dragons.
One army did well recently at a UK tournament. There is alot of discussion on DakkaDakka.com about the codex. My understanding is that the codex represents a new paradigm for the design and function of the army.
There is a tournament at Dream Wizards in Rockville Maryland in January. Let me know if anyone would like to come up for that weekend.
