Today after school, I took the scarab in for the board game club to try to take down. We played "heroic" level which gave the human side 1000 points to work with off the bat.
The first task for the scarab was thinning the Spartans down some. In fact, after looking over at the huge mass of good guys deployed around me on the battlefield, I immediately made a full third of them vanish in a puff of mathematics! Easy as pie!
In actuality, the first 1/3 of the game was spent taking shots from the enemy forces while killing one guy a turn and spawning several big covenant units in the scarab interior to allow my partner to take the fight outside. It wasn't long before a duo of hunters appeared atop the scarab and started laying waste to the forces below. Several turns were spent just shooting troops to reduce their life and accuracy. Once that was done, the main gun could keep one guy down each turn.
Once we got to 15 kills (of the 30 we needed to win), we decide to pounce on the humans, blasting five guys to bits in one round. Unfortunately for us, that brought those five powerful units back in at full strength. With some lucky sniper shots and some rocket launchers causing major problems, we were soon crippled and taking main core damage as we tried to grab up the last 10 kills we needed to end the game.
Unfortunately, we were only able to get to 29 before a well place shot caused our scarab to hit the ground with deafening finality.
It was a great, very close match. If we hadn't gotten greedy and waited a turn or two to pounce it might have gone the other way.
As it is, the 7th graders will be gloating on Monday...
