Did my first 1K today. Placed 11 out of 18... not great... but not too bad for it being my first, I guess. Here's the band I played.
3 x Cannibal Pariah 2 x Barbstrider 1 x Hive Pincer 1 x Jack of Blades 1 x Horrid Poltergeist 2 x Knight of Autumn Gate 2 x Carrion Spiker 1 x Fleshless Reaper 1 x Voodoo Manipulator 1 x Eater of Hope 1 x Dreadmorph Ogre
I came out of the war 3-3. The band did extremely well against everyone except for the Chess Master variants. The top 3 bands that took the tournament were all of that type, and they were the only ones that I lost to. Most of the games (with the Chess Masters) were pretty close, save for 1. I received some really good advice about game play from Zxqueb... which is the only reason I didn't get shut out completely against them.
Thanks Zxqueb!
There has to be some way of preserving the appease quality of this band yet give it a bit more defense against the Chess Masters. Any suggestions?

No problem! Going 50% win in your first tournament is a solid record.
Your band is pretty good, although 3 appease pieces is a tad high. The spikers help to offset that, though. You have a good selection of the power fear pieces, though swapping in a thunder sultan for one of your little guys might not be a bad idea. It's definitely useful and combos well with the fleshless reaper and can put things closer to you to allow for more consistent shift striking. Being able to move pieces on the board is always good!
Mono fear definitely has some game against chessmaster. Practice a bit with your band and I'll wager you'll be able to pull out some wins against it.
Thanks for letting me know how you did! I hope that above all you had some fun!
Did you see any interesting / unusual warbands?

The most unusual was a mono-passion warband that the guy threw together about 15 minutes before starting. It was comprised of only commons, most of which were borrowed from other players that morning. I was extremely surprised to see how well it played. It went 2-4, but every single one of the loses seemed to come down to this guy losing the initiative on the last turn. I wish I could remember the exact minis and number... but I can't. I overheared someone mention that he had at least 1 of every passion common in the band.

Hmm.. interesting. I guess I'm not surprised it went 2/4 Mono passion has a hard time with staying power because it's defenses are so low. Other bands tend to cruise through it. And initiative plays a HUGE roll since it needs to be able to beat face on it's own terms.
