Jeff and I played a free form Star Wars game, no maps just terrain. Some rules we used were.
-General firing range of 24 inches. -Anything farther than 24 inches was -6 to attack. -If your attack goes below 0 in this way, the attack cannot be made. -Unlimited combined fire. -Heroscape rules for line of sight was partially in affect.
Basically, if we could peer down and see a figure, we could shoot it if it was a huge or anything of that nature. If we coul just barely see a normal fig, cover was granted most of the time.
Hindering terrain was on the board. However, most of the flat "hindering" we turned into hindering for movemet. I do have to say the Heroscape "I see you" style worked easier than anything else.
And the Republic decimated the Seperatists. Maul never go swing.

It all ran pretty smooth really, the cover rules were the hardest to deal with, and like Dave said we pretty much just scrapped it by the second turn and went heroscape style. This was good enough just to get the game moving, but I wouldn't do it again without more tweaking.
Specifically, the Star Wars system breaks down when you throw out targeting rules for cover. The paltry defense stats of the seperatists allowed Dave to pretty much kill anything he wanted in any order he wanted. Most of My stuff never got a shot off, even with the range restrictions.
BTW rule change one, a figure that cannot make a long range attack (over 24") cannot combine fire with a figure making a long range attack.
Also if anyone else tries this, the -6 modifier for shooting a target over 24" away comes off the base attack stat of the figure. If this reduces the attack stat to zero or lower, the attack can't be made...I was very happy with the way this rule worked out.
Commander effects are also a problem, not due to gameplay effects, but instaed due to complexity. It was possible (especially for the clones!) to have 8 or 9 commander effects modifying one figure, this makes it difficult to run the army as well as know what's going on when your opponent blasts you with it....
It was fun though ;D
