Warlord called me last night about the High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind and her potential broken setup with Savin, basically with the potential for shooting the entire board with a 5 die magic attack for free.
An army might look like this:
High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind
Searing Arrow
Psychic Scream
Savin Lightguard
Flash of light
Cleanse
Irana
Counterspell
Fire Blast
It's definitely a strong army, since you can hang back a little bit and blast the heck out of the Fighters as they advance. Even the casters will get wittled down after the 2-3 turns it'll take them to get into range.
The downside to the army is high cost. 25 honor seems a bit rediculous... especially if you are going to hang back for the first bit of the game and blast stuff. A low cost team that picks up VP position quickly might have an advantage... of course, it might also just die quickly.
I can also see Nathressa Darkstrider with sap and gouge being quite strong. You could end up next to tyrande on turn 1 and force her to act again on 6. That would give you enough time to get into a position to deal with her a bit better.
I wonder if a dual Nathressa + range support team might work well in general (perhaps inara to blast for 8 or . Tick up the big guys and jump on the weakest clothy with your rogues + support if necessary on turn 3... that should probably kill the first. On turn 5 you can start pounding one of the other guys, weakening it significantly or finishing it off completely. That could be 8 victory points very quickly with a 3-1 advantage going into tick 6. If your support is Inara (with counterspell and flame aoe) instead of, say, Phadalus the Enlightened (with healing wave and earth shock), you could untap one of the gouges and put further time pressure on the opponent's guys.
I'd probably go with Phadalus though. He seems to be a better all-arounder and adds healing while keeping counterspell. He also reduces the army to an even 20 honor.
I think we are just starting to scratch the surface of this game. I'm not convinced that high priestess is broken, but will definately necessitate screaming down the board as fast as possible to counter her action card and kill her support quickly.
Nathressa is also very good, but foiled by counterspells and ogres... especially ogres.. which is interesting because tyrande would rip through ogres like butter. It should make for an interesting metagame. There seems to be a bunch of viable armies beyond the combo-crazy ones discussed in this post.
Now that I've reflected on it, it seems to me that there is a nice in-game balance with a bunch of counters built in for the powerful stuff.
Now -- how to deal with bolvar...
