Jonas, jsaunders, lv5 West Coast envoy from WK just posted a great thread in a few places. forum.wizkidsgames.com/showthread.php?t=139689One of the major changes being discussed and heavily considered is the retirement of set retirement. among other things. In the words of General Melchett:
"Well b**ger me with a fish fork!"
Wow, this is the sweetener we were waiting for.
I get the impression that set retirement is out just as soon as Origins is over. I wonder if this is post-dated to allow older sets back in?

Personally, I think it's very sad. One of the great things about Mechwarrior as a game was that it had one ruleset with no house rules. One went to a tournament and was able to know what to expect. That won't be the case now. New players will have to keep up with any number of house rules, what pieces are playable at various venues, and so on. Sure, this is great for the hardcore players, but I think it's terrible for young players or casual gamers. Why will I want to go to my local Venues and play against BAW's Arrow IVs, Sprints, and Dasher IIs? We were having people simply refuse to play games against him because they knew they couldn't win against those pieces. Now, those necessary pieces are simply not to be found anywhere. Ah, well... at least there's a new edition of Battletech coming out soon. Maybe I can use my pieces for that game. It's sad... I was really looking forward to Wolf Strike, and what would come after. The game and the community were going in the right direction at long last. Ah, well.

For what it's worth, young/casual gamers tend to only go to one venue (as opposed to venue-hoppers like myself), meaning they can familiarize themselves with whatever house rules are in play. They can also appeal to the BM to allow/disallow certain figs in tournaments. That means it's baw that has to do the work to keep up with the venues, not the casual-types.

@southpaw...
Brother, I hope you're in charge of coming up with the banned/resricted list for Worlds. Cuz I know you'll make the right calls.

I thought that this year's nationals showed a great variety of pieces, and I would be happy to leave the set retirement just as it is now, so you could keep some artillery. There were even SM2's, and somehow the Highland Hadurs survived the multipog TTL's. I am not eager to go back to the ARROW IV days, or even the AA Artillery days, and agree with Elite that venue house rules may be really troubling, especially if Battlemasters don't list them in advance and very carefully at that. It saddens me also because any lessons from the recent Nationals are now much less valuable with the return of pieces like Kenneth....

It will be interesting.. To see how this rolls out. I played some older figures the other day and they weren't the most awesome but it was fun! We still have a different standard for Worlds and Nationals but that isn't a terrible thing either!
