I’m upset. Maybe more upset than I should be, at least when put in perspective. No one very close to me has died recently. I have a roof over my head, a job that I like, enough to eat, good friends and a wonderful family. But I found out on Tuesday night that Game Wizards, my friendly local game store, is closing its doors at the end of the month. And after spending hours there each week for close to 6 years now, to me it feels like a friend has been diagnosed with a terminal disease.
The more I think about it, the more I realize how much more the store is than just a place to buy games and play them. The store represents a community of gamers, most of whom I have come to know regardless of whether or not we play the same games. It is a place to connect with people who have similar passions, a central meeting spot for pickup games and a place to be accepted even if your hobbies lie outside the mainstream.
The loss of the store is a huge loss to the gaming community in the Twinsburg area.
I wish Mike, the owner of Game Wizards all the best of luck as he begins a new chapter in his life. We will miss you and all you have done for the local area gamers.
As for Mechwarrior, we will finish off the month at the store and might have a big game towards the end of the month on a non-Tuesday. Also, try to turn out for the 27th. DragonDawg will be back in the area and looking to lose as many games as possible . Southpaw13 has also said he will try to be there and bring some of the west siders.
Right now, I am trying to find a place to run Mechwarrior come January 1st. I am not ready to let the game die in my area after it has started to grow again. If anyone has any ideas of where we can run the game locally to keep the same player base, I am open to suggestions. I just dropped Collectors Sportscards, Comics and Games an email, so hopefully there will be a positive response from them.
