Welcome back to the second part of our weekly TI3: Shattered Empire (TI3: SE) developer preview! Last week, we previewed the new races found in the expansion. This week we will be showcasing some of the new technologies that the great races will use in their attempts at galactic conquest.
First and foremost, this expansion includes four brand new technologies, one in each of the four technology colors. These technologies not only provide more options for the players, but also counter-act some of the more powerful strategies in the game. Read below for a sneak peak of the new technologies found in TI3: SE.
Automated Defense Turrets: Are your Destroyers being mocked? Do players laugh when you build one? Well, they won’t be laughing when your Automated Defense Turrets grind their Fighter swarm into a fine powder. This easy-to-attain technology is plain and simple, but also delightfully powerful. Those who like to hide behind their Fighters are in for a rude awakening.
Requires: Hylar V lasers
All Destroyers recieve +2 and roll one additional die when making an anti fighter barrage
So much for rocking the giant stacks of fighters -vladd
Nano Technology: The mighty “Direct Hit” Action Card was once the Achilles heel of Dreadnoughts and War Suns. The day has come for the mighty weapons of war to reclaim their throne. This high-level technology makes two of the most frightening weapons in the galaxy much more intimidating! This technology is not just limited to “Direct Hit” -- it can also protect you from a wide range of other Action cards, such as the tricky “Lucky Shot.” In addition to the main ability, Nano Technology also gives players the power to gain all new planet cards in a refreshed state. Aggressive players will be in heaven when they are able to take over an enemy planet and use its resources on the same turn!
Requires:Micro technology
Your Dreadnaughts and Warsuns may not be targeted by Action cards. Also when you claim a planet, its card is refreshed.
That’s Not All!
In addition to these new technologies, players will find two more new technologies, a revised and updated technology tree, and one of my personal favorites from this expansion -- a brand new type of technology!
Players who enjoy diversity and powerful racial abilities will enjoy the brand new race-specific technology cards. With this option, each race now has a single race-specific technology that it may purchase for additional resources instead of receiving a normal technology. Race-specific technologies do not have any pre-requisites and may only be acquired by the specified race. Read below to get a taste of these new technologies.
L4 Disruptors: Let the Barony of Letnev rejoice! Their race-specific technology is one of the most powerful ones in the universe. With a simple investment of 6 resources, the Barony may now use their racial ability (+2 to rolls during invasion combat) for free! This will make the Letnev one of the most feared invaders in the known galaxy. As an aside, players will no longer be discouraged from trading with them. And if the Letnev were not scary enough, imagine an invading force of Letnev Shock Troops!
Each of the other 14 races also receives its own special race-specific technology. These cards range from the violent Sardakk N’orr’s Berserker Genome to the Naalu’s Telepathic Mind Weapon, and even to the Yin Brotherhood’s Fanaticism. Each and every race now has a specialized technology that complements and fleshes out their powers as a race.
Congratulations, you are now informed about the new technologies heading your way in Shattered Empire. That’s all for this week, but be sure to tune in again next week for more Twilight Imperium Excitementium!
