I know I'm behind the times, but I heard good things about this game, so I picked up the "big box" of Carcassonne (Includes Inns, tower, traders, dragon and river expansions) on a lark yesterday and gave it a shot with Warlord and Burton.
Game 1: Played the basic game. My feelings: Yawn. Ok game, but not too special.
Game 2: Played basic game + Dragon. My Feelings: Awesomely fun! A better handle on the rules plus the "screw you" of the dragon made for a really fun game. Low points scored meant that it was a race all the way to the finish.
Game 3: Basic game + Dragon + Tower. My feelings: Fun, but with some reservation. Both the tower and dragon expansions are aggressive expansions (i.e.; you use them to negate your opponents' board position) with only the base set, there was too much negation vs room to build on the board. No one could really get a good toe hold on the board without being disrupted.
Game 4: Basic game + all the expansions - 4 or 5 tower tiles. My feelings: The BEST game of the night. Lots of tiles made for a complex board with enough room to manuver and enough options to stop your opponents from doing what they needed to do. LOADS of points scored (Warlord and I both had well over 200 and Burton had over 150) with an amazing come from behind victory thanks to the hording of trade goods.
I have to say, if you are going to play Cascassone with 3 players, you NEED all the expansions going. When we play with 2, I think the best option will turn out to be base+inns+traders +6 tower tiles, 4 portal tiles and 4 princess tiles (no dragon).
I can't wait to pull this one out again!
