Phil said it was mech on mech -- he did not say 1 on 1 (though I haven't read the chat, so I don't know how WK phrased it). There is a difference there. I am still betting solaris will not be 1 on 1. From the chat script... The plan is for Solaris to be playable both one 'Mech on one 'Mech and teams of 'Mechs. However, there are no plans to include infantry and vehicles in Solaris VII. The alliance building side of Solaris is something that really wouldn't lend itself to a multi-player tournament. I can imagine players with lesser mechs (or even skill) ganging up to take out perceived threats accross the other side of the table. A one on one tourny would at least prevent that but with a total of 2 mechs on a 3x3 table, it would hardly make for a 50 minute tactical battle of combined arms and skill.

Solaris was always about the alliances made. However, I am definetly a proponent that Solaris needs to be expirienced based. That was the whole point of the campaign and alot of the abilities were based on some off of when you died from certain people. If its just "come every week, bash-em up, go home" it will will faster than Bush's approval rating.

Solaris Championships, Great idea. Making the Mechwarrior championship a Solaris event, not so hot...
Solaris needs to be a different game. I fear that by trying to keep the old pieces useable, it will hinder developement of the new game and both will suffer.
Why not just cancel Mechwarrior in its current incarnation. It can't sustain itself as is, so let it go. They have already commited to fixed army boxes, so lets rebuild this thing from the ground up, fix its problems, make it better, and release it in pre-painted army boxes. Sort of Like Warhammer 40k but prepainted.

Solaris is a great idea, and launching it at GenCon - tied in to the World Championship - is fine. I just wish that one round of the tournament would be Solaris, with at least one sealed and at least one regular constructed round. Sort of like the "secret format" - part of the whole, but not the entire show, so to speak.
