I'll be posting this same message on several different sites. My friends and I are planning a trip up to GenCon Indy in August (16-19), for the Mechwarrior Solaris VII World Championship and whatever else WizKids will give us that weekend.
Please respond to this post or PM me and let me know if you're interested in joining us. We'll be traveling up from Birmingham, Alabama, straight north through Tennessee and Kentucky to Indianapolis. We might also be interested in sharing hotel rooms, depending on how many of us get to go.
Thanks for your interest!

Dont get me wrong, I loved MW so if it is an MW event ill show if it is an Solaris event ill probaly pass.
Afterall I have to travel from a lot further than Alabama.....
Sharing Hotels will help to keep cost down.

Hmm. That's too bad Elite. I have a funny feeling it's going to be solaris only for worlds. Hopefully there will be some side MW AoD events as well.

Jonas told me that the championship will be Solaris only. But there will also be a number of side events.
Can't say I blame you for not wanting such a long trip and big expense, elite! I haven't been able to make it to a US Nationals for the same reason. I do hope that you change your mind - I was looking forward to meeting you in person.
Besides, most people tell me that the Scrubby Match on Thursday night is the main event anyway!!

Hey Zxqueb - I know that Marc Andre picked House Kurita as his "totem" faction for his pilot card. Can you recall the favored factions of the other pilots in the Championship pack?

So... Will there be any sort of scrubby match at Gen-Con? I've been looking forward to getting some quality AoD in.

So... Will there be any sort of scrubby match at Gen-Con? I've been looking forward to getting some quality AoD in. No srubby match that I know of, but Specter/Masakari is organizing a competitive tournament of sorts for the evenings, when Solaris and Storylines are over. Go check out MW Realms, and if need be search my recent posts for "GenCon Roll Call."

My friends and I are planning a trip up to GenCon Indy in August (16-19), for the Mechwarrior Solaris VII World Championship and whatever else WizKids will give us that weekend. Did you manage to get there? How was SOLARIS? Did the side event take place? Were there many overseas players present? So many questions...

I don't know about AG, but I was there. I ended up playing only 3 games of Solaris, one against Calvin Lin, one against Pipgamer and one big 7 mech battle. It was ok, but I just don't love the S7 ruleset. I found it amusing that Dragondawg and Moonsammy both qualified for Sunday with only a couple games played each. I don't even think they knew they were qualified (or cared much). The turnout was not good and the vibe from the former worlds players (me, marc, wolfmarkies, smilinmike) was pretty negative.
There were storylines there, but I hate storylines (and these seemed particularly bad), so I'll let moonsammy relate how those went.
For me, the big excitement was in the Haloclix pre-release. I have never played the video game or have any attachment to the license, but the game is a LOT of fun! The rules, while based on heroclix, have some pretty major rules changes that allow some really interesting tactics. I really love the swap/respawn rules as well as the upgrades. There were 258 people there playing, which made it the biggest WK event of the weekend, I believe. Even if I hadn't won the event and went home with a Scarab (It's HUGE!), I would have still had a blast playing. It's the most fun I've had playing a WK game in a LONG time!
I am anxiously awaiting boosters to be released in stores. If I recall correctly, it is going to be out on the 25th of this month. Only a couple more days to go!

I heard alot of people were dissapointed with Storylines being that they were mystery effects that were into effect after the armies were made. I know for a fact that Moonsammy had a JF army one day and you couldn't make special attacks for entire rounds of the tournament. Then they made a mine field scenario and he took a tank-drop big assault mech army and got boned. I can't say I enjoy effects like that. Great bone my faction, all we do is make MDFA's not like we do anything else well at all. Seems bad.
Haloclix was pretty cool. I got sh*te for booster pulls but I found a booster outside the tournament hall and it had an ultra rare inside of it so that made my day.

Z, you asked for some feedback on SOLARIS on the rules thread from "Worlds" players. Its been 3 years since I last went ( ) so I'm hardly current but here goes. The best thing about S7 has been the introduction of a large number of mechs and CECs into the MW world. Apart from a few battlepacks, its been a desert out there for almost a year. Not all of the S7 pieces are great, some of the dials are very suspect for MW, but I can only see this influx as a good thing if it helps to add some more variety to the current mix of troop types. Nearly forgot about the game... I have enjoyed playing it at club level with a bunch of mates. A good time was had by all. Nothing at stake but the fact that you bought the next round of drinks when you were KO'd (that's soft drinks - just in case you thought us Brits did nothing but drink beer all day... . As for spending an entire day at a convention playing S7 - its bound to get a bit stale. I liken it to the Battle Royales that were played when I went to Gencon - a welcome release away from the tourney table. As for the rules, I don't like the hexides bit but it does get you away from all that measuring and placing. I like the heat and damage thing and a couple of nice touches (like mechs without the melee symbol have to halve their primary damage if they make a cc attack). I'm sure I'll play it but once I've got my stable of mechs set, they will probably sit in the bottom of my figures box "just in case" someone calls an impromptu S7 match.
