We had a nice game last night in order to get some new people into Mechwarrior. We made a concerted effort to send out personal invitations to other area wargamers who don't play clicks (warhammer, warmachine and historicals, mostly). We got one person who showed up to play, one person who came late to say hi (he'll come back another time and learn) and one who was interested, but couldn't make it. We also pulled another guy in who was hanging out in the store for a total of 6 players in a big table event.
It went a little something like this: X-sythe and I both made a series of armies based around Situational alliances. I made BR/SW, LI/ROTS and DF/SC. Each army was 1050 points, all mechs and vehicles (though no vehicles were played in the chosen armies), no infantry or artillery. Halofurry made some merc armies which rolled a random faction pride effect every turn. Ice fields was in effect.
The game was DF/SC (actually HK/NC since we were playing a little fast and loose with the rules) + one merc against HS/HD + one merc.
We didn't actually finish the game as we spent a while getting started, explaining things. At the end of the evening, only the Nova Cats and the House Steiner units were left on the battlefield.
Anyway, it was a really cool game and nice to get some new people into it. Since it is basically all mech, you get to show people the basic mechanics while not overwhelming them with subtleties. And because the forces were designed for new players, you got to show them pilot abilities, PCs, FP and SAs without it becoming overwhelming.
Hopefully we'll get a couple more players when we do this again.

That sounds like it went over really well. Its an awesome idea conscripting new people like that. I hope that you guys get a big scene again like the past.

Swimming now consumes every Tuesday until Winter Break comes and we just have practice, then in which I will be about 20 minutes late for. Sorry about that D= . Also, just do not let any of the new players get too thingyy if they are teens, the position of "Best young player" still belongs to me, even if I cannot come for a bit . /Not trying to brag, but I am, sort of. //Does NOT mean I can handle every adult there, Zxqueb and XScythe still give me trouble.

I actually have a new person signing up for an event. I think perhaps they have moved to the area! (probably a college student) and I am getting a visit from someone on another board it is nice to see it picking up a little!

@ Kaiser The guy who picked up the starter is an adult, as is the one who came but couldn't stay. The one who couldn't make it is about your age, Kaiser.
All three are warhammer /40k players who stopped playing at the store when an influx of teens hit the game on Sundays. Having witnessed the Sunday games, it's nice that MW has such mature teens and adults playing!
@ baw: I'll certainly am glad for a slow build of players. Every bit helps, especially with 1/2 of our player base disappearing for sports / music / school stuff on a regular basis. *Cough* James *Cough*

You know Z, if you want a large player base, just come on up the West Side Suburbs. We've still got a good 6 people coming out for the games at Recess. Oberlin, well, we wish that it was doing better, but when its Postman steve, mike and V, and myself when I can make it. Gotta love our die-hards tho. Maybe over the break I can bring my friend Dan back, he loved the game. Too bad he goes to BG half the time.
Heres to hoping we get more people again, a nice resurgance would be really helpful, and hey we got Jim our store owner playing!

That's cool. We usually have between 3 and 6, but I'd like to see that build to 6-10 on a regular basis. I think the trick (at least on our side of town) is targeting the adults who are more serious war gamers. My hope is that a few will bring in a few more and so on. Not to mention that I miss playing games with those guys, and since I am not as keen on the Warhammer rule set as I once was I need to help get them started on Mech. Plus I am just consistently amazed at how wonderful this game is. Great tactics, great pieces, fast play, supported tournaments. Awesome. And don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to come out to the west side to play more regularly. But you guys pick really bad times to play! The best I can usually do is meet you in the middle at Warzone, but no one but me and xscythe show up there anymore. I suppose gamer's haven may be a good meet in the middle place too, but again, I never see you guys up there (again, with the exception of Mike who travels more that I do even!). I want to try to do a new player / big table event every month or so. Hopefully that kind of thing will help! Z

Once I get done with this INSANE semester I've been having I'll start to play mech more. Warzone in on my list of places to try to hit once life settles down. I've been having a really difficult time this past semester with alot of different things, so forgive me for my lack of attendance. Work and school, bad combo, 9-5 everyday with no real breaks, bad, and USERS *shudder*.

We have one new player from the college across the street and another who will be joining in January. That will be wonderful to see new blood again. Also I saw a fellow wargamer from about 20-13 years ago. He said he might stop buy and play some. He was in the hobby store while we were playing and he was buying paints for his BattleTech Figures I told him to come and try MW

That's great! I'm going to have to start packing extra decent, easy to play 450 and 600 pt armies to try to get some of the walk in people to try the game.

ThoughI will not be coming back very soon, I, if you would like, would do the same. Since I divide my factions out into specific orders, I have several rather-well battle-tested armies that I could lend out as well. (SW 600, DF/HK 600)... Good to hear about your new players Baw.

I might start putting some armies of the week together for people to use. If we start getting mroe new people, it would be good for them to have good armies to play!
