So, any thoughts about the announcement of the 100+ ton 'mechs? Will Kotch retire? Anyone else?

There is some precidence for >100 ton mechs in CBT. I think people tend to overreact to these "big" announcements (no pun intended... really!) without waiting to see how the stats / gameplay are. This could be a nice addition to the game or it could be an overpowered piece. My feeling is that it won't be too bad since big tends to mean big target. Look how many assaults last in a normal tournament environment! Without support, big mechs tend to get knocked down quickly.

Hmm The only precedence I can think of in the Battletech I remember was the mackie? Wasn't that potentially over 100 tons.
I really really dislike it.. It just gives me the feeling of not only Power Creep but Power LEAP!
It doesn't set very well with me at all. They are very pricey also. If they make them absolute useless stat wise not too many will buy them!
They look cool but I really don't like the idea of them in a game! I guess I will have to wait to see the stats but overall I am not at all pleased with all the signals these units are sending out.

I need to see the stats.
Till that time I am more worried about vanguard. RISC gear etc.
1 problem at a time.
I am worried if people drop the game because of unkown pieces, I do hope that Kotch continues. But it is against CBT dogma, still in a 100 years I think that are allowed make a bigger mech.
It is more worrysome if arty is truly dead next year and all you see is lumbering hulks trying to hit each other.
We will see. E130

I concur they could be nothing. They offend me greatly from my BTECH Side but still they are worrisome from a game standpoint also! I hope they turn out to be nothing more than offensive from my BTECH memories.
Sealed has pretty much turned into who can pull the biggest mech without being able to pull arty there is no real counter to the big mechs!

Hmm The only precedence I can think of in the Battletech I remember was the mackie? Wasn't that potentially over 100 tons. I looked back over my post. The precedence is for tanks over 100 tons (superheavys). My mistake. At any rate, I don't mind breaking the 100ton barrier for mechs... especially because of how much time has elapsed in the BT universe. I also like new additions to this game, provided they are balanced. Hopefully the ares is balanced. I could see an Ogre type situation begin kind of fun to play out in the BT universe (lots of small stuff vs one huge thing).

It does take a lot of tactics out of the game with the "ogre" type situation in mechwarrior! I really don't care for it. People are struggling with fighting the Levin Atlas right now!

Really? A dropped Merc Kelswa + mech support is an easy answer to EJL.

The Realms Thread on the Ares has taken a reather interseting turn - there is now a raging debate on the relative utility of Shermans and Tigers and their respective armour stats... I still say its a lot of points to pay for just a 2-Cap transport

it is a lot of points for a 2 cap transport. The utility of 3 cap over 2 is incredible!

Yeah. Actually, if you think the Ares is bad, the 190 tonner coming out in 2007 will be a five cap able to drop a tank and formation together! Z

*HANDS OVER EARS* I am not listening.. I don't hear that *NANANANANANA*
I hope it is a one time thing that will never be heard from again. Hopefully it will turn into a rememberance like the charger. (Oh that is why you put weapons on an assault mech) You giggle when you think about it but never would seriously play it!

Wizkids have just put up a post about the Poseidon Ares - the most lethal yet. Looks like they're not going to go away...
